January meeting place and time set!

Ok, the next meeting will be on Sunday, Jan. 26th, 2014 from 2pm-5pm

The meeting will be at LVAC member Dave's place. If you recall, we had out first ever meeting there back in August of 2013. Since then, there have been newer members that have not heard Dave's system! Hence the reason for doing at his place again.

Dave's system features JBL Synthesis loudspeakers aka high end JBLs, and Bryston amplification. The sound is big and bold, and plays as loud as you can stand it. Both analog and digital recordings will be played, evaluated, and enjoyed. Pizza and drinks will be served to satiate the appetite.

So, you don't wanna miss this!

For details, feel free to email us @ dave_a_2005@hotmail.com or motorcitydeadman@gmail.com

Happy Holidays from the LVAC

From all of us here at the LVAC; have yourselves a safe and fun filled holiday season. Be sure to have good food and drink, and get those systems rockin'! You know we will! And take a moment to spare a thought for those less fortunate than yourselves.

Our Fifth Meeting

Ok, fellow audiophiles in the Las Vegas area and everywhere really (this is the world wide web after all,) the first audio club ever in Sin City, has now completed its fifth meeting!

We had our fifth meeting this last Saturday, (which was 12-21-13)

This time we had a very special guest speaker! His name is Brad Lunde of Lone Mountain Audio, and he is the official US distributor of the world renound ATC Loudpseakers made in the UK!

Inside the fantastic state of the art Palms recording studio (inside the Palms Hotel and Casino here in Las Vegas,) we had a great time listening to tunes (all digital, including High Definition tracks via a computer) on Brad's all ATC system. We could have listened for days on end, it was that good! The bass was phenomenal for just a 6 1/2 inch woofer in the SCM 40 speakers, and the midrange and highs were beautifully integrated. It was as if you could reach out and touch the music. And once again, it was good times!

But not only that, Brad put on a very informative and entertaining lecture about the art of recording, studio vs. home sound, the technical side of ATC loudspeakers, the history of ATC, and what the company is all about and what they stand for.

The system was a very simple one and comprised of the ATC SCM 40 loudspeakers and the new SIACD, 100W/ch integrated amp with DAC and CD player. Plus Brad's laptop computer for the HD tracks. Cables were ordinary 12 gauge (speaker) and basic interconnects.

A BIG thanks to Brad, Zoe (of the Palms Recording Studio,) and Richard for making this special event happen!

Be sure to visit the ATC room at CES 2014. Tell them we sent you.

Right now we have 9 members, and we're looking for a few more good audiophiles in the Vegas area and beyond.

Again, meetings will be once a month.

So, don't be shy, we'd love to have you for the next meeting, and as of now it's still FREE to join!

Component of the Week: Accuphase E-600

LVAC member Dave says: "A soon to be reference standard for integrated amps! Need I say more? It's not cheap, but the nothing of this caliber is!"

The integrated amplifiers from Accuphase operating in full class A enjoy an excellent reputation both in Japan and overseas for their outstanding musical qualities. The E-600 represents a model change from the popular E-560. While incorporating the sophisticated technological know-how gained by Accuphase over the years, it features a further refined AAVA volume control and uses the latest circuit topology and strictly selected parts of the utmost quality. The E-600 is destined to become the new reference model for high-class integrated amplifiers.

AAVA is a revolutionary principle designed for high performance and ultimate sound. It integrates the amplification and volume control tasks in a single electronic entity that uses analog processing and eliminates all variable resistors from the signal path. Its performance and sonic purity do not deteriorate over the years, providing excellent reliability. The AAVA version in the E-600 takes the principle to the next level, delivering the same peerless performance in a more compact form factor.

The power amplifier section is built as an advanced instrumentation amplifier, which enables fully balanced signal transmission throughout. Together with the further improved MCS+ circuit topology and the highly acclaimed current feedback principle, this makes for even better electrical characteristics. In the output stage, high-power MOS-FET devices renowned for their great sound and utter reliability are arranged in a triple parallel push-pull configuration per channel.

Component of the Week: Parasound Halo A51 amplifier

This is LVAC member Kirk's pick for Component of the Week.
Kirk says: "This is a drool worthy amplifier for home theater users everywhere.  Comes in silver or black, to fit your decor needs!"

Andrew Robinson in his review stated:  "With a sub-$5,000 asking price, the Parasound A51 is a tremendous amplifier. While its asking price is far from cost no object, its performance is on par with the best, mating a beautiful midrange and non-fatiguing top end to a lively and punchy bass section that, while not the deepest-plunging, is one of the most musical I've encountered in a long while. With reputation and reliability in tow, the Parasound A51 is a stunner in almost every regard."   http://hometheaterreview.com/parasound-a51-five-channel-power-amplifier-reviewed/

Component of the Week: Luxman PD-171 turntable

This is LVAC member Dave's pick for Component of the Week.

Dave says: "Very ingenious and high quality Japanese (and actually made in Japan!) belt drive turntable with speed control and a host of other features. Luxman is back in the analog world, and with a vengeance. It's not cheap, but no component of this quality rarely is. The sound is said to be very dynamic and transparent. The only caveat is the tonearm, which is said to be one of the cheaper (but still high quality) Japanese-made Jelco brand tonearms. Nevertheless, a turntable I could easily live with for many years. Build quality is head and shoulders over many European and American brands as well. Overall, you can't go wrong with the Luxman PD-171!"

Nice Rocky Mountain Audio Fest Article!

Check it out here:

http://audiomatters.blogspot.com/2013/10/rmaf-2013-some-reactions.html

Component of the Week: Onkyo P-3000R preamp

This is LVAC member Dave's pick for Component of the Week.

Dave says: "This is really one Hell of a preamp. Packed with features (see the links below) and a complete array of digital inputs (including usb and optical out,) this is a preamp for the 21st century. I first saw and heard it at the 2011 CES and I was very impressed. Don't let the low price (in high end audio terms) fool you, this is truly a state of the art component. Word on the street is that it compares to preamps costing up to $4k, some say even $10k. Well, that may be a bit far fetched, however what is true is that this unit punches way above its weight class; it's user-friendly, built very well, and sounds superb. What's not to like? Well, some high-end nuts (I mean that in a good way,) will poo-poo the lack of balanced XLR inputs and outputs, the lack of adjustable phono loading, and too many bells and whistles for their tastes. For this price you can't have it all, and in my opinion, I think it's crazy to spend $3k or more on a preamp that just has balance control, input control, and volume control. Which is what the overwhelming majority of high end preamps are like! Anyway, I've got my eyes on this unit, and when the time comes, I am most likely going to buy one! I urge you to go and check this preamp out. You won't be sorry."

Component of the Week: The McCormack DNA 1.0 Deluxe amp (gold level)

This is LVAC member Nick's pick for Component of the Week.

Nick says:

"I bought the McCormack DNA 1.0 Deluxe amp used on Audiogon for $1,000 last year. Have upgraded it to gold level which cost $1,865. That includes the high performance diode bridge and HiFi tuning fuse. I did the diode bridge not necessarily for performance at this time, but rather because Steve said it is so much easier to do now while the gold upgrade was being done. Here's the link to his site   http://smcaudio.com/  upgrades   The amp has 100 hours on it. It is a huge improvement over my CIA D100's. Excellent resolution, more body and slam. Gorgeous midrange. I have SP Tech 2.1's upgraded to 3.0 status. It's a great speaker imo. Both the amp and speakers are very neutral. I am only running my dac into the amp. It is a modded Squeezebox 2 with dedicated power supply. The sound is quite good considering it's from 2007. But it has that digital edge. A friend is lending me his Buffalo diy dac. I will have it in a few days and that should (hopefully) be an eye-opener for me. I'll be auditioning interconnects and speaker cables soon as well. I also have a Basis Ovation turntable with a Graham 1.5 arm, but I haven't run phono for 5 years. I know, I have to get that going.... So I'm going to be a busy guy for a while with all this going on."

Component of the Week #2: Oppo BDP-105 Universal disc player

From all of us here at the LVAC; for those in the US and Canada, have yourselves a safe and fun filled Labor Day weekend. Be sure to have good food, good spirits, and get those stereos rockin'! You know we will!

Component of the Week #2: Silnote Audio's Morpheus Reference Series II XLR analog cables

This is LVAC member Kirk's pick for Component of the Week.

Kirk says:

"I use these cables between my Oppo BDP-95 and my Marantz AV8801 preamp/surround sound processor.  I can do A/B comparisons as I used a different input for the XLRs and kept my RCA cables connected.  I ran "pure direct" mode for both when means the signal goes straight through without any processing to the amplifier.  All of the digital to analog conversion was done via the Oppo's onboard Sabre DACs, some of the best there are (at least they were when I bought the Oppo!)."

"Test discs/songs included Andrea Bocelli's Sogno, "the Prayer", Audioslave's self-titled debut CD playing "Like a Stone", Norah Jone's Come Away with Me, title track, Dire Straits Sultan's of Swing (the very best of Dire Straits), title track as well as "Lady Writer", "On Every Street", and "Your Latest Trick" (live).  I also played Jim Brickman's My Romance (an evening with Jim Brickman), an HDCD.  Track 13, "By Heart" features Jim at the piano (of course) along with vocalist (and his high school friend) Anne Cochran in a live concert at Capital Theater in Salt Lake City.  This, along with Norah Jone's are my go-to songs for female vocals and piano.  Audioslave's minimalist approach to "Like a Stone" helps as each individual instrument is clearly identifiable and locatable on the soundstage.  Dire Straits' tracks are very musical and complex, with multiple instruments, acoustic and electric guitar, studio and live settings, etc.  A very versatile disc."

Here's what Silnote Audio, the manufacturer says about this cable:
"The Morpheus Reference Series II design is the cable that will capture the soul of the    listener, which deliver a true natural musical experience."
"Coherency with glorious mid-range warmth, a very musical cable that is palpable with life like "you are there" experience."

"The Morpheus Reference is designed with multiple 24k Gold, Silver, and Copper UPOF7N, zero crystal, surgical high grade precious metal that delivers one of the most exclusive listening experience – The XLR version is a true triple balanced design.  Proudly handcrafted in the USA."
"I found these cable to add depth to the bass line and deepen the soundstage compared to my RCA cables."

"Hear these for yourself September 28th when the audio club will be meeting at my house and you are all invited to listen to my humble system.  Bring your favorite discs, 2 channel, SACD, DVD, Blu-ray, etc.  Sorry, I don't have a way to play vinyl."

Best regards,

Kirk

Component of the week: JBL Synthesis S4700 speakers

The S4700 is a floorstanding 3-way high-performance loudspeaker built upon the same professional-grade technology used in the acclaimed Project K2 S9900, one of the most advanced and sophisticated loudspeakers in the world today.
At its foundation, the S4700 uses an all-new cast-frame 15-inch woofer (2216Nd) with a powerful dual 3-inch voice coil and neodymium motor structure for outstanding balance with the horn-loaded compression drivers.
Mid- and high-frequencies are reproduced by a pair of titanium diaphragm compression drivers and a single-piece, SonoGlass® dual horn assembly. The 2-inch Aqua-Plas™-coated titanium diaphragm compression driver (175Nd-3) is mated to a 90° x 60° Bi-Radial® horn and delivers mid- and high-frequencies with lifelike dynamics and startling realism while an ultra-high frequency 0.75-inch titanium diaphragm compression driver (138Nd) with a 60° x 30° Bi-Radial horn recreates critical air and spaciousness.
Premium-quality network components and dual binding post inputs ensure audiophile performance in any application.
The attractive furniture-grade cherry wood veneer enclosure is internally braced at critical points and is tuned via a rear-firing port.
The S4700 is intended for use in high-performance 2-channel audio systems or as an LCR loudspeaker in a JBL Synthesis multi-channel home theater installation.

Stolen equipment in Nothern Nevada

ALERT: STOLEN GEAR
Theft Report from Brian Ackerman of Aaudio Imports

"On Friday my truck was broken into in the state of Nevada at the hotel I was staying at on my way to the California Audio Show. All the Ypsilon gear was stolen, Aelius amps, PST100 MKII, DAC100 & CDT100. Along with several Stage III cables, several HB Power Distributors, Acapella platforms and tools. Damage to my truck and a broken back window. I filed a police report and they have a detective on the case. The retail value was around $250,000 USD... the thieves didn’t get the remote controls for the PST100 preamp or CDT100 CD player, so whomever tries to purchase these units will probably be looking to purchase the remotes at some point because the units won’t work without them. Then we can turn them over to the police department immediately after getting their information. The gear was stolen in the city of Sparks Nevada, USA on Friday August 2nd, early morning. Any information on this matter can be set directly to detective Jason Edmonson.

A list of the gear stolen includes Ypsilon Aelius amplifier, Ypsilon PST100 MKII, Ypsilon DAC100 D/A Converter, Ypsilon CDT100, HB Cable Design PowerSlave Marble (x3), HB Cable Design PowerSlave Acrylic, HB Cable Design PowerStar Horizon (x2), Stage III Concepts Kraken Pwr. Cord (x5), HB Cable Design Proton power conditioner cord, Acapella Fondato Silenzio Isolation Platform (x5) and various specialty tools. Thanks for your support in this matter.

Best regards,

Brian Ackerman
