we have determined where and when our next meeting will be at! Below are
the details and whatnot. Thanks as always for looking.

The November LVAC meeting will be on Saturday, 11-21-2015 from 2-5 pm. The meeting will be held at one of the longest running high end
audio stores here in Las Vegas; Image, Sound, and Control! Bill, the store
manager, will give the club a guided tour of the establishment and all
of the wonderful sights and sounds therein. He will also be speaking to
the club as well about various audio-related topics.

The major lines they carry are Golden Ear, Rogue Audio, Revel, Pro-Ject, and B&K. What's interesting about this about this establishment is not long ago, they used to to carry ultra high end equipment. That will be touched in our in our discussion. Can big bang for the buck stuff compete and be actually better than the ultra high end? Hard to say, but you never know...

Bill will also provide refreshments as par for the course.

This is a special event, so don't miss this! Be there or be square, as they say.

We had our 25th meeting on 9-19-15.

This time LVAC member Les hosted. This was Les’ second time hosting in 2015 – the first time was in January, 8 months ago. In the interim, Les had moved from a condo to an apartment and re-installed his audio and video system.

Les had also taken his speakers from the prototype stage (or, as I called it in January, “a DIY project”) to a finished furniture quality system. Both the appearance and sound quality (which was good to start with) have improved. Les credited part of that to the assistance he received from LVAC member Barry, who spent several hours in Les’ living room Thursday evening tuning the system with Barry’s TEF system to prepare for the meeting.

As he did in January, Les presented a wide range of vinyl, CD and video source material. He contrasted the differences between those media. The music ran the gamut from classical to jazz to rock including vintage and current recordings. As was the case in January, all of the different genres of music sounded great on Les' system. The system does not discriminate on recording quality, either. It features several octaves of “lower mid-range” often missing from other systems which highlight the full sound range of pianos, guitars, many other musical instruments and male and female vocalists. The system was very neutral without sounding thin and bright as many audiophiles would think that horn speakers with solid state electronics would be.

Les also played selections submitted by other members. One of them, "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens, which member Jonathan brought on both vinyl and on CD, proved that CDs don’t wear out but records do.

Thanks to Jonathan as well for loaning Les a Musical Fidelity V-DAC for the demo. It “Plugged” and it “Played.”

Les presented two separate speaker systems using the same “front end” starting point in a form of an “A – B” comparison. He is obviously a big JBL fan, so all of the drivers are by JBL. Les called the systems “The Big Horns” and “The Black + Whites” – looking at the photo it is obvious why. An equipment list and photos from Jonathan and Les follow.

During the meeting, Les mentioned that he would like to sell any or all of his equipment to any interested party.

So, once again, there you have it - yet another successful LVAC meeting. Thanks again to
Les for hosting, the various members for showing up, and you for your support.
A High End Audio legend visits the LVAC! *CANCELLED**ATTN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES, THE SPECIAL EVENT BELOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THE EVENT WILL BE RESCHEDULED TO A LATER DATE AND TIME*

*UNTIL THEN COME TO CES 2016 AND VISIT THE DAN D'AGOSTINO MASTER AUDIO SYSTEMS ROOM. IT WILL BE ROOM 122 ON THE 30TH FLOOR AT THE VENETIAN HOTEL AND CASINO IN LAS VEGAS*

And who is this pray tell? Well, it's a man that really needs no introduction. His name is Dan D'Agostino,
and he has been building high end audio electronics since 1980. His
first company was Krell Industries, which revolutionized the way Class A
power amplifiers could be built and how they could drive any speakers
known to man. Right around 5 years ago, he struck out on his own with a new company that bears his name; Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems. These units are the culmination of what Dan has learned over the years, and if both reviewers and end users are correct, this is the best stuff Dan has ever created to date.

So, since the D'Agostino factory is just south of Vegas in neighboring Arizona, we extended to Petra D'Agostino (Dan's wife) an invitation to Dan to come up to Vegas and demo his wares for our humble little club. We weren't expecting much, matter of fact, we were expecting something along the lines of; "who do you think you are CES? RMAF? get the F outta here!" or just the old silent treatment. Surprisingly enough, Dan has been oh so kind to agree to demo his wares for us on Saturday, December 5th, 2015 from 2-5pm PST. Yes, this will go down, believe it or not. It's a major coup d'etat for this club. Never in our wildest dreams did we think this would happen when we formed 2 years ago. Well guess what, it's happening. And no Dan, we're not worthy!

This oh so special event will be at LVAC member Mike's place. Mike has hosted a few time before over the last 2 years, and he never ceases to amaze us with his professionalism and hospitality.

However, this is a members-only event. Because of space, cost, and time considerations, itt is not open to the public. To become a member of the LVAC, click on the link below.
Below are the details and whatnot. Thanks as always for looking.

The September LVAC meeting will be on Saturday, 9-19-15 from 2-5 pm. Les will provide food and drink as par for the course.

This month's meeting will be at Les' place. This is his 2nd time hosting since January 2015.

To get an idea of what his system is like, click on the link below.

As mentioned before, we also celebrated our 2nd Anniversary! Who knew that this little club in the midst of all the gambling, buffets, and ahem strip joints would grow and prosper like it has? We sure didn't! Then again, this is the entertainment capitol of the world, so why not?!

We had our 24th meeting on 8-16-15.

This time LVAC member Steve hosted the affair, with his superb 2 channel system that is spellbinding in every way. This was Steve's second time hosting in about a year and a half. We also welcomed our new members Gary and Craig.

As usual, we had a great time listening to a variety of tunes (mostly CD and SACD) on Steve's system. We could have listened for hours on end as the sound was very natural and ethereal, but very dynamic and punchy when it wanted to be. The system really strutted its stuff on good ol' Led Zeppelin! But then it was truly captivating on other genres such as classical. It is to say that Steve has 1 of the better systems in the LVAC, it is in fact that good. It was a great way to enjoy oneself and to celebrate an anniversary.

Steve's system rundown is here:

http://lasvegasaudioclub.blogspot.com/2014/03/our-eigth-meeting.html

To that, Steve adds:

"OK, changes in my system since last time. I upgraded my LessLoss Signature power cords to their top of the line DFPC Reference power cords. It made a significant improvement. I also replaced my PS Audio Power Plant Premier (which I still think is a dandy device) with two kinds of LessLoss system conditioners: 3 of their now-discontinued Blackbody units (http://www.lessloss.com/blackbody-p-200.html) and 5 of their new Firewall modules (http://www.lessloss.com/firewall-module-p-216.html), which I install between power cables and the components they attach to. This has made the system even more dynamic and cleaner. I've also tried different arrangements of footers (too many variations to recall now), and moved the speakers and the Argent room lenses. As a few club members can attest, the improvements between the last meeting here and this one are not subtle. I'm happy."
is the world wide web after all,) the first official audio society ever in Sin
City, has now completed its 23rd meeting! Our 2nd anniversary is just a few days away!!

We had our 23rd meeting on 7-25-15.

This time LVAC member Kirk hosted. This was Kirk's second time hosting in a year. And he had a few surprises for us in the guise of his new ATC SCM19 speakers driven with an ATC P1 (a Stereophile Class A component on loan from the ATC distributor, Brad Lunde of Lone Mountain Audio) amp. Also, he had a Systemdek turntable (expertly set up by fellow LVAC member Mike) with a Nagaoka cartridge. This marked Kirk's venture back into analog in quite some time.

We had a great time listening to a variety of tunes (mostly digital) on Kirk's systems. There was good food and drink courtesy of Kirk and his wife. Needless to say, no one left disappointed at all. The combo of the ATC amp and speakers produced a very bold yet vivid sound. The depth of soundstage was most impressive. The speakers were hitting almost 100 decibels( measured) without strain. Which is impressive for a small monitor speaker, and a speaker in general. In my opinion, the speakers sounded better at higher volumes. The turntable was dead quiet and produced a sound that punched above its weight class. In fact this whole system did too. A very well put together combination of components where the strengths outweighed the weaknesses.

For a list of the rest of the componentry in Kirk's system click on the link below.

http://lasvegasaudioclub.blogspot.com/2013/09/our-second-meeting.html

Kirk says:

"L&R speaker cable is now Audioquest CV-8 cable http://www.audioquest.com/pdfs/circular_array/cv8.pdf

"I
moved the old L&R speakers, the B&W LCR6’s up above the TV as
my surround sound “height” speakers for a 7.2 arrangement. So far so
good with those, though it wasn’t a huge improvement (but it was an
improvement)."

"I also
added a Sony XBR 65” 850A 4k TV, but we didn’t demo it this time since I
was focused on the ATC SCM19 v2’s and the P1 amp."

And it was the best
the system has sounded to date. Everything said about this system in
our previous post was that and then some. It was truly better as opposed to just different.
we have determined where and when our next meeting will be at! Below are the
details and whatnot. Thanks as always for looking.

The August LVAC meeting will be on Sunday, 8-16-15, from 2-5 pm.

The meeting will be at LVAC member Steve B's place. This is Steve's 2nd time hosting since the club began in August of 2013. And speaking of which, this meeting will also serve as our 2nd anniversary party! Yes, it has in fact been that long. You say you can't believe it? Well, neither can we!

Steve has a unique system with a nice big room, and features custom made speakers. So don't miss this!
is the world wide web after all,) the first official audio society ever in Sin
City, has now completed its 22nd meeting! We're fast approaching our 2nd anniversary!

We had our 22nd meeting on 6-25-15.

This time LVAC member Roy hosted. This was Roy's second time hosting in just 3 months. And I'm sure the pressure was on to not perform a rehash of the previous event! Don't worry, it wasn't.

We had a great time listening to a variety of tunes (mostly LP, which is a good thing) on all of Roy's 3 (count 'em 3) systems. And neither of them disappointed. Of course each system had its combination of strengths (mostly strengths,) weaknesses (a few,) with differences between each component and components easy to discern. And each system had a knack for grabbing your attention completely. It was never boring or "just ok."

And it was the best
the systems have sounded to date. Everything said about these systems in
our previous post was that and then some. It was truly better as opposed to just different.

Why you ask? Well, we'll let Roy tell you, in his own words:

"Mostly it was fine tuning of the arms, cartridges by adjusting vertical tracking force and azimuth. I also time aligned tweeters on the Vmps RM/X and adjusted phasing on upstair system and fixed the SME 3009 Series III. That arm was not in service the time before..."

It just goes to show you that small adjustments in a high end audio system can yield big results. This was the case over at Roy's place.

So, there you have it, yet another successful LVAC meeting. Thanks again to Roy for hosting, the various members for showing up, and you for your support. Every piece to the puzzle is an important one, because without that one (or more than one) piece, the puzzle never gets completed. Food for thought.
Show Newport Beach, CA 2015http://theshownewport.com/

First, a show wrap-up by LVAC member, Nick:

For me (Terry-fellow LVAC member-was doing his thing for a while) the most pleasant
surprise at the show was the Stein Music room. Holger Stein and his
wife, who are from Germany, were demoing their system and the sound was
very natural and engaging. The soundstage was excellent with lots of
detail. I was only able to listen to a few orchestral cuts as well as a
little Bob Dylan and a female artist named Youn Sun Nah. I can't speak
regarding the bass response, the the midrange and top end were spot on.
What's also interesting is that Mr Stein designed all of the components
including the speakers. It was digital only, but he also showed me a 2
box phono stage that I believe will retail for under $2,000. He also has
a cartridge. I can't say that I recall any other designer who "does it
all".

The Odyssey room was interesting as the
sound was good and Klaus at Odyssey did a great job making it sound as
good as it did as it was the strangest shaped room I recall seeing at
any show. It was the second time I've met Klaus and he's a fun and
engaging guy. He also makes a stand for a great price so my equipment
will finally have a good home.

I've always
been interested in the Sonus Faber speakers and this time they were
paired together with McIntosh. There was also a single piece from Audio
Research which may have been a music server. The sound was good, but it
was a rectangular room and we were seated too close to the speakers and
that didn't allow the speakers to shine as I've heard great sound from
Sonus Faber at other shows.

This was the first
time I've ever been at the Newport Show and I was only there Saturday
and Sunday, but I truly had a great time. Terry was lots of fun and I
may go back next year as my brother lives very close by...and I love
free room and board.

As I was in California, I bought some lotto tickets so I might be able to buy my dream system. But I didn't quite win anything.
My dream system might well consist of DartZeel with Sonus Faber
speakers or maybe Magico or. I can't say that I've ever demoed
any reference speakers in my home although I love my SP Tech Timepiece
speakers and my modded McCormack DNA 1.0 amp as well. That's it for now.
is the world wide web after all,) the first audio club ever in Sin
City, has now completed its 21st meeting! Can you believe it? We sure can't!

We had our 21st meeting on 5-16-15.

This time LVAC Founder and President Dave once again hosted the affair, with his modest 2
channel system.

We had a wonderful time listening to a variety of tunes (CD and LP) on
Dave's system. It was a very laid-back casual affair reminiscent of our early meetings close to 2 years ago. But, something was remiss in the
system though! Dave says: "The system always sounded good, but something was missing, and I couldn't figure out exactly what that was. I couldn't put my finger on it" So, what was the problem? Well, after a curious glance at an audiophile forum (audioaficionado.org) Dave found out that the FM Acoustics cables he uses, uses pin 2 on the XLR connectors as minus instead of plus, which is what the Bryston amp uses. What this means is that the system was out of phase, and that can and will compromise performance unless a particular recording is out of phase, among other things. With time running out to get a pair of high end high quality (UP-OCC copper or silver) RCA to RCA interconnects from preamp to amp (which will also be featured in Dave's upgraded system,) we came up with a quick fix which was to reverse the speaker cable leads. What happened was a very big surprise! Everything came into focus, the sound was more transparent and dynamic, and the bass was really powerful. To everyone's surprise, the system had plenty of that good ol'
"midrange magic," much like most of the systems we've heard here at the
LVAC! It was mesmerizing and grabbed your attention completely. The best the system has sounded to date. Everything said about this system in previous posts is that and then some. As par for the course, good food in the form of submarine sandwiches (courtesy of Port of Subs) potato chips, and
soft drinks were served. And yes, once again a good time was had by everyone. No one left disappointed on many different levels.

A list of equipment is here: http://lasvegasaudioclub.blogspot.com/2013/08/ok-fellow-audiophiles-in-las-vegas-area.html

We had our 20th meeting on 4-19-15.

The meeting took place at the home of LVAC member Roy. This was Roy's first time hosting. What is unique about Roy is that he is not only an LVAC member, he also acts as a dealer and distributor under his company Vegas Image Audio right here in the Vegas Valley. So we got him to host a meeting and demo his wares without having to travel anywhere! This allowed Roy to demo as much equipment as you would see at a store or even a trade show, which was obviously to the club's advantage. Others have this distinction (being in a club and in the business) as well, however Roy had as much or maybe more equipment for demo as the big shots in big markets like New York, Chicago, and L.A. That's really what was impressive; to have it here in a smaller market which is Vegas.

To learn more about Roy and Vegas Image Audio, go to: http://vegasimageaudio.com/

After having some great food to munch on, Roy began the demo of the main system. His presentation was very informative and entertaining. He explained the ins and outs of the system (and the other 2 smaller systems) very well. No stone was left unturned info-wise. As far as the sound goes, the system (which costs well over $500k) was very dynamic and transparent. It had a knack to keep your attention at all times, wasn't fatiguing, and preserved the harmonic structure in the music. All of this is important obviously, and quite frankly, many audio systems can't do this kind of stuff. However, the system could be very revealing; exposing bad recordings for what they were. You could tell as the dynamics and transparency disappeared, and the imaging collapsed. With good to great recordings (in all genres) the system shined very brightly. There was a clear synergy of high end components and high quality recordings. The better the recording, the better the system sounded. Which was no surprise as this is what many ultra high end systems do. They don't mask or cover up anything, they present the recording as the producer and engineers intended. Neutral is an overused word, but it clearly described this system as a whole.

Up next in Roy's upstairs lounge, was another very unique system featuring very large horns driven by a humble vintage B&K ST-140 amp and Dodd tube preamp. The sound was not as big as the main system on the first floor. But, it packed a punch, was very clear and precise (especially with that old time B&K amp,) and it costs quite a bit less as the main system! Transients were well preserved, and the sound was very inviting. As for the speakers, there was no notion of them having a typical horn sound that many audiophiles abhor. This system was not the biggest and the baddest, or the most costliest, but it is one that many audiophiles could find satisfying in the long run.

Finally, we were taken down to Roy's master bedroom. The system there featured open baffle speakers driven by tube amps. The amps in particular are designed by Roy's colleague Jack Elliano of Electra-Print Audio. The preamp was the Ambrosia designed by one of high-end audio's unsung heroes, James Bongiourno. The sound in this room, was excellent, but not to the level of the previous 2 systems. Which is perfectly understandable as the room with closer boundaries influences the sound more. Plus, the level of equipment is not quite that of the other 2 systems. The system did deserve a bigger room. But, as many audiophiles do not have big or dedicated listening room this would be a great solution until one gets the proper listening space. However, the amps and preamps were top notch and sound-wise perhaps rivaled the ones in the main system a bit.

Near the end of the demo, Jack Elliano spoke to the club about technical matters, the nature of the audio business, and about his company and his equipment. It turns out that Jack has over the years, supplied and supplies transformers and other audio parts, to some of the big names in high end audio!

Finally, we were introduced to a veteran musician named Merv Harding, a long time Vegas resident who has played over the years with the likes of Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra. We were looking for some great stories, which we're sure Merv has, but time unfortunately was running out. Next time.

All in all, a very nice afternoon on a warm Spring day here in Las Vegas. Basically, everyone had a good time to one degree or another. No one left disappointed or let down by the whole thing. We look forward to have Roy host again, hopefully in the near future.

We had our nineteenth meeting on 3-28-15.

For a list of equipment, check out this blog post here:

Now, that's most of what was on hand. There have been improvements to the system, with the addition of a restored and rebuilt vintage Harmon/Kardon Citation II amp.

The main speakers have changed to a pair of restored and rebuilt Magnepan 3.6s. Below is the link to the company's (Magnestand) site who did all of the work, and good work they did indeed.

The meeting took place at LVAC member Mike's place. This was Mike's second time hosting. Once again, he pulled it off like he was like an old pro. As you can see in the list of equipment via the link above, most of his components are vintage. You can't judge a book by its cover, and the vintage components put out a sound that was on a par with today's top stuff. It was transparent, and had the old reach out and touch quality. As some say, "that midrange magic." Particularly in voices and acoustic instruments. The Magnepan speakers imaged like crazy, and the ribbon tweeters made percussion instruments like cymbals and cowbells sound very realistic indeed. Even more so than the previous Apogee speakers in this writers' opinion. The bass and overall dynamics, compared to today's top dynamic cone speaker systems was a bit on the light side, but what was presented was tight, quick, and nimble. Regardless, it was a very enjoyable experience to say the least, and all genres of music were played, from classical to rock to blues to jazz, and the sound was so good that we went overtime in the meeting. Which rarely happens. All in all a very successful meeting, perhaps the most successful 1 in our almost 2 year history. Last but not least, the food and drink Mike provided (BBQ pulled pork, rolls, coleslaw, various snacks, unlimited beverages, desserts, etc.) was nothing short of excellent. So basically, once again good times were had by all. No one was disappointed. And as you know, that's how we do it here at the LVAC!

This time around, LVAC member Mike will host at his place. This is Mike's second time hosting.

The meeting date and time is Saturday, March 28th. from 2-5 pm PST.

Mike has some interesting additions to his system that must not be missed!

We had our eighteenth meeting on 2-21-15.

For a list of equipment, check out the blog post here:

http://lasvegasaudioclub.blogspot.com/2014/10/october-meeting-place-and-time-set.html

However, there have been some interesting additions to the system. Instead of the McIntosh 225 amp, in its place is a fully restored Marantz 8B! Also, the speaker setup has changed. Gone are the JBL Studio 590s (they weren't really very good in this system anyway.) In it's place full time are the Klipsch La Scalas. Plus, very interesting horn tweeters from Altec (805Bs on top) and Eminence (APT 200 with bi-radial horn in the middle). As well as Crites A/4500 crossovers. To round it off, 2 Velodyne subwoofers are used.

The
meeting took place at LVAC member Todd's place. This was Todd's second time hosting. He was
very professional in his presentation. And as you can see in the list of equipment via the
link above, most of his components are vintage. You can't judge book by
it's cover, and the vintage components put out a sound that was
on a par with today's top stuff. It was dynamic, transparent, and had a
visceral quality. Compared to last time 6 months ago, it was even better, if you can imagine that! So, it
was a very enjoyable experience to say the least, and all genres of
music were played, especially classic jazz from the Blue
Note label of which Todd scored an entire collection of last year. Overall, a very successful meeting, and the
food and drink Todd provided (pizza and soda pop) was nothing short of excellent. So
basically,
once again good times were had by all. No one was disappointed. And
that's the way it should be! That's how we roll here at the LVAC!
